Sky Ride fire cause identified

Thursday, 23rd July 2009 By Dan Ketteringham

An electrical fault is believed to be the cause of the major Sky Ride station fire on Tuesday night.

The Uttoxeter Advertiser is today reporting that fire investigation officers believe the fire began accidentally and was caused by an electrical fault.

Six fire crews attended the fire at 10:30pm on Tuesday 21st July but it took four hours to bring the blaze under control. The Cloud Cuckoo Land station was destroyed in the blaze and it's unlikely the ride will re-open this season.

Fire Investigation Officer, Kelvin Knapper said: "An investigation into the fire has now been concluded and, after working alongside engineers at Alton Towers, it is believed the fire was caused accidentally due to an electrical fault."

Alton Towers have apologised for the inconvenience and have offered vouchers giving guests £5 off on a return visit to the park if they feel the fire affected their stay.
