Planning application for new ride submitted

Park News
Saturday, 22nd September 2007 By Dan Ketteringham

Plans for a new water ride to replace the existing Splash Kart Challenge have been submitted to Staffordshire Council.

The new ride will part of next year's "Project Penzance" overhaul of the Merrie England area. The current theme of Middle Age England will be overhauled into a new pirate theme, no doubt with an Alton Towers twist.

The planning application is for "installation of new boat ride and ancillary structures at the boating lake". The ride has been rumoured for some time to be a Splash Battle, and this new planning application seems to confirm this. The boating lake referred to used to be home to the park's iconic Swan Boats ride, before their replacement in 2004.

It is expected that this new water ride will not be pay-per-play, unlike the current Splash Kart Challenge attraction.

The new ride will be one of two new rides for next year, with the other expected to be a small-scale flat ride somewhere in the area. The Tea Cup Ride will also be rethemed as part of the changes, though The Flume is expected to remain unchanged.
