Runaway Mine Train update

Park News
Monday, 28th August 2006 By Dan Ketteringham

The Runaway Mine Train, which had a minor crash last month, is scheduled to reopen before the end of the 2006 season.

Earlier this month, Alton Towers were given the all-clear by the Health and Safety Executive, following an investigation into what caused a coupling between two of the ride cars to come undone.

Investigators said that the front half of the train, which rolled back into the second half, did so at a "slow speed".

A spokesman for HSE said: "All rides are subject to annual safety checks, like an MOT for a car, and this ride had that certificate.

"There were also periodic maintenance carried out and records were up to date. A daily check had been carried out that morning and so this would appear to be a single isolated incident."

On Saturday, the Head of Maintenance at the park confirmed that the ride would reopen before the season's end, clearing up speculation that it may not have run again until the start of the 2007 season.
